TL;DR
- Braze vs Salesforce Marketing Cloud is a choice between two operating models. Salesforce Marketing Cloud is a suite that lives inside the Salesforce ecosystem, now rebuilding itself on Data 360 and Agentforce. Braze is a standalone, real-time engagement platform that reads from your data warehouse.
- Pick Salesforce Marketing Cloud if Salesforce CRM is your system of record, email is your lead channel and you have admins who already speak AMPscript and Journey Builder.
- Pick Braze if your customers live in an app, your data lives in Snowflake or BigQuery, and you need journeys that react in real time without a sync schedule in the middle.
- Neither one remembers the conversation. A WhatsApp reply, a call with an advisor and a CRM stage change still sit in different systems, which is the gap an orchestration layer on top of both is built to close.
Salesforce now sells at least four different products under the Marketing Cloud name. That is the first trap in any Braze vs Salesforce Marketing Cloud evaluation, because the product in the demo is rarely the one in your contract.
Braze vs Salesforce Marketing Cloud is a comparison between two enterprise customer engagement platforms. Salesforce Marketing Cloud is Salesforce's marketing suite, built on Journey Builder, data extensions and, in its newest edition, Data 360 and Agentforce agents. Braze is an independent platform that builds real-time user profiles from app, web and warehouse data and runs cross-channel journeys in its Canvas editor.
Both are leaders in their category. So the useful question is which operating model fits your stack, your data and the team you actually have. This guide walks through the lineup, the data model, AI, pricing models, implementation and a decision framework, then the one problem neither platform solves.

Which Salesforce Marketing Cloud are you comparing Braze against?
Salesforce Marketing Cloud is a family of products, and the right comparison depends on which member you mean. Salesforce Ben's June 2025 breakdown groups the lineup like this.
- Marketing Cloud Engagement (MCE). The B2C platform that grew out of the ExactTarget acquisition and runs on its own infrastructure. Salesforce describes it as a platform for email, SMS, push notifications and cross-channel journey orchestration, with WhatsApp and advertising on top.
- Marketing Cloud Account Engagement. The B2B automation product formerly called Pardot.
- Marketing Cloud Growth and Advanced. The first editions built on the core Salesforce Platform, launched in 2024.
- Marketing Cloud Next. The agentic edition announced on June 11, 2025 and available from July 2025, with Agentforce agents for campaign creation, personalization decisioning, lead management and segment intelligence.
The data layer under the newer editions changed names too. Data Cloud became Data 360 at Dreamforce in October 2025, its sixth name. On Salesforce's own product page, journeys in Marketing Cloud Next now run on Flow, and existing Journey Builder journeys can be used inside Flow.
Most enterprises evaluating Braze today run MCE. That is the comparison this guide makes, with Marketing Cloud Next called out wherever Salesforce's roadmap changes the answer.

How do Braze and Salesforce Marketing Cloud compare side by side?
Braze and Salesforce Marketing Cloud differ most on data model, CRM fit and who runs the platform day to day. The table below compares them on ten dimensions that decide an enterprise evaluation.
| Dimension | Salesforce Marketing Cloud (MCE, with Next) | Braze |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | Suite inside the Salesforce ecosystem | Standalone engagement platform beside any CRM |
| Data model | Data extensions, synced from CRM on a schedule, Data 360 in Next | Real-time user profiles, events streamed by SDK and API |
| Warehouse data | Through Data 360 and Zero Copy in the newer editions | Cloud Data Ingestion from Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks and more |
| Journey builder | Journey Builder, moving to Flow in Next | Canvas, with Context and Agent steps |
| Strongest channels | Email, SMS, push, WhatsApp, advertising | Push, in-app, Content Cards, email, SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, LINE |
| Salesforce CRM fit | Native through Marketing Cloud Connect | Webhooks, partner connectors or a shared warehouse |
| AI layer | Agentforce agents and Einstein | BrazeAI Decisioning Studio and Canvas agents |
| Scripting and personalization | AMPscript and server-side JavaScript | Liquid and Connected Content |
| Pricing model | Editions per org, usage-based add-ons, annual contracts | Editions scaled by monthly active users and Action Credits |
| Who runs it | Certified admins and developers | Marketers, with engineering for SDKs and data |
Read the table as a map of trade-offs. Salesforce tends to win the rows about CRM fit and email depth. Braze tends to win the rows about data freshness and who can ship a change.
How does the data model differ between Braze and SFMC?
The data model is the biggest technical difference in Braze vs SFMC, and it shapes everything downstream, from segmentation speed to how much your data team gets pulled in.
Salesforce Marketing Cloud stores audiences in data extensions
Marketing Cloud Engagement keeps audiences in data extensions, which are relational tables inside the platform. CRM records reach those tables through Marketing Cloud Connect and synchronized data sources, which copy Salesforce objects on a polling schedule. Trailhead also notes that every synced contact or lead counts as a contact in Contact Builder, whether you ever message it or not.
Marketing Cloud Next moves the foundation to Data 360. That brings identity resolution and Zero Copy access to warehouse data, and it ties your marketing roadmap to Salesforce's data platform.
Braze builds a real-time profile per user
Braze stores one profile per user and updates it as events arrive from its SDKs, its REST API or your warehouse. Cloud Data Ingestion syncs attributes, events and catalogs from Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks, Microsoft Fabric and cloud storage. Braze Currents streams engagement events back out in real time.
The practical result is that a Braze Canvas can react to an event seconds after it happens. An MCE flow reacts once the sync has run.
Salesforce brings your data into marketing. Braze brings marketing to wherever your data already lives.
Where does Salesforce Marketing Cloud pull ahead?
Salesforce Marketing Cloud wins when Salesforce CRM is already the center of your revenue operation. Opportunity stages, account owners and service cases sit one connector away, and Journey Builder can act on them without a custom integration project.
Salesforce Marketing Cloud also covers ground Braze does not try to cover.
- B2B automation. Account Engagement handles lead scoring, nurture and sales alignment for B2B teams inside the same vendor relationship.
- Enterprise email depth. MCE's Email Studio and AMPscript give large email programs fine control over content, data lookups and send logic.
- One data platform. Data 360, now joined by Informatica after Salesforce closed that acquisition in November 2025, gives the suite a data integration story that reaches past marketing.
- Analyst standing. Salesforce was named a Leader in Gartner's 2025 Magic Quadrant for Multichannel Marketing Hubs for the eighth year running, according to its analyst reports page.
The momentum sits in the data layer. Salesforce's second-quarter fiscal 2027 results, for the quarter ended July 31, 2026, report that Data 360 ingested 104 trillion records, up 355% year over year. Salesforce does not break out Marketing Cloud revenue, so that is the closest public signal of where its investment is going.
Where does Braze pull ahead of Salesforce Marketing Cloud?
Braze wins when the customer relationship runs through an app, a website and messaging channels in real time. Its channel list covers push, in-app messages, Content Cards, banners, email, SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, LINE and webhooks, and the mobile channels sit at the core of the product.
Braze also moves faster inside a journey.
- Journey-level memory. The Canvas Context step creates and updates up to ten variables for a user as they move through a journey.
- Agents inside the flow. The Canvas Agent step sends context to an AI agent and routes the user on its output, for example a lead-readiness category.
- Warehouse-native data. Teams that already model customers in Snowflake or BigQuery feed Braze directly, without rebuilding tables inside the marketing tool.
- Analyst standing. Braze was named a Leader in Gartner's 2026 Magic Quadrant for Multichannel Marketing Hubs, its fourth year in a row, positioned highest for ability to execute.
The customer base is growing at the top end. Braze's second-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings release, for the quarter ended July 31, 2026, reports 2,789 customers, up from 2,422 a year earlier.
Salesforce Marketing Cloud is strongest when the CRM leads. Braze is strongest when the customer's last tap leads.
How do the AI layers compare in 2026?
Both platforms now sell AI agents, and the two approaches reflect their data models. Salesforce puts Agentforce agents on top of Data 360. Braze puts decisioning agents inside the journey.
Marketing Cloud Next ships Agentforce agents for campaign creation, personalization decisioning, lead management, paid media optimization and segment intelligence. Salesforce's own research, cited in the same June 2025 launch announcement, found that 75% of marketers are experimenting with AI while only 32% say they use their data effectively. That gap is the reason Salesforce ties every agent to Data 360.
Braze bought the reinforcement learning company OfferFit, closing the deal on June 2, 2025. At its Forge conference in September 2025, Braze made BrazeAI Decisioning Studio generally available. Its agents choose the channel, message, offer and frequency for each customer, and BrazeAI Operator and an MCP server followed in beta.
Both AI layers decide the next marketing message well. Neither is designed to carry a two-way conversation across sales, service and messaging, which we come back to below.
How do Braze and Salesforce Marketing Cloud price their platforms?
Braze and Salesforce Marketing Cloud both sell through annual contracts and neither publishes full list prices for enterprise tiers, so the useful comparison is the pricing model. Each model rewards a different shape of business.
- Salesforce Marketing Cloud. Salesforce's pricing page sells Marketing Cloud Next Growth and Advanced editions per org per month, billed annually. Personalization, Marketing Intelligence and Loyalty are add-ons priced by usage, and existing customers get upgrade editions. Account Engagement lists SMS and WhatsApp as add-ons.
- Braze. Braze's pricing page lists four editions, Go, Select, Pro and Enterprise. Cost scales with monthly active users plus shared Action Credits that each channel and AI action consumes. Braze says it charges no seat fees.
The cost drivers follow from the models. Salesforce cost grows with editions, add-ons and the contacts you sync, which matters because synced CRM records count whether or not you message them. Braze cost grows with active users and message volume, so a large app audience with heavy messaging moves the bill most.

What does implementation look like for each platform?
Implementation effort is where most Braze vs Salesforce Marketing Cloud decisions get made in practice, because each platform asks for a different team.
Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engagement asks for platform specialists. Personalization runs on AMPscript and server-side JavaScript, and CRM data arrives through Marketing Cloud Connect. Marketing Cloud Next adds a data step, because Salesforce's setup guide starts by enabling Data 360 and installing marketing data kits, work it assigns to a Data Cloud architect.
Braze asks for engineers at the edges and marketers in the middle. Mobile and web channels need the Braze SDK integrated in your apps, and warehouse ingestion needs a data team to model the tables. After that, marketers build Canvases and personalize with Liquid.
The CRM link takes planning, because Braze documents its Salesforce Sales Cloud integration as a community-submitted webhook pattern for creating and updating leads.
The tools are only as good as their adoption. Gartner's 2022 survey of 324 marketers found they use only 42% of their martech stack's capabilities, and an enterprise suite with a long setup is where that gap tends to widen.
Braze vs Salesforce Marketing Cloud, which should you choose?
Choose between Braze and Salesforce Marketing Cloud by matching the platform to your system of record, your lead channel and your team. Here is how the decision usually breaks.
Choose Salesforce Marketing Cloud if
- Salesforce CRM is your system of record and marketing must act on opportunity, case and account data.
- Email is your highest-volume channel and your team already knows AMPscript and Journey Builder.
- You run B2B and B2C programs and want one vendor across both.
- You plan to adopt Data 360 and Agentforce across sales and service anyway.
Choose Braze if
- Your customers engage through a mobile app, web app or messaging channels more than through email.
- Your customer data is modeled in a warehouse and you want marketing to read it directly.
- Campaigns must react to behavior within seconds.
- Marketers need to ship changes without a specialist for every edit.
Some enterprises keep both, with Salesforce Marketing Cloud on email and Braze on app channels. That works when one system owns consent and suppression, and it doubles the number of places a customer's history is split. If Braze is on your list alongside other engines, our Braze vs Iterable comparison covers the next head-to-head. Teams still widening the shortlist can read our guides to Braze alternatives and Iterable alternatives.
What does neither platform fix?
Neither Braze nor Salesforce Marketing Cloud remembers a conversation across the systems a regulated customer actually moves through. Both decide which marketing message goes out next. The two-way exchange that happens afterwards lands somewhere else.
Take Rachel Hayes, who applies for a car loan at a regional lender. She starts the form in the app, asks a question about documents on WhatsApp, speaks to a dealer finance desk and gets a callback from the bank. Each of those touches is logged in a different place, so the next automated step knows that she opened an email and very little about what she asked.
The same thing happens to a patient booking a procedure or a policyholder renewing cover. The engagement platform sends well. The context of what the customer said, asked and was promised lives in the CRM, the messaging inbox and the call notes. Our explainer on customer journey orchestration shows why a send engine alone cannot hold that context.
Both platforms decide the next message. Neither one carries the conversation.
This is the job of an orchestration layer. Zigment is a Conversational Revenue Orchestration Platform for GTM teams. It sits on top of HubSpot and Salesforce stacks and works with the engagement engine you already run. Its Conversation Graph keeps one timeline of every conversation per customer, across WhatsApp, web, email and calls, and its agents act on that context autonomously, from qualifying and routing a lead to updating the CRM and triggering the next step in whichever engagement platform you keep.
So the choice between Braze and Salesforce Marketing Cloud still matters. It decides how you send.
The harder question is whether your stack remembers what the customer said before the send. See how Zigment sits on top of your Salesforce or Braze stack.
