**TL;DR**

- Digital account opening drop-off is the gap between people who start a savings or current account online and people who end up with a funded, active account. US banks and credit unions lose 3.36 digital applications for every one they complete, according to Cornerstone Advisors.
- Applicants stall in four places: a form that asks too much, the identity and document step, the video verification appointment, and the funding step after approval.
- India adds its own leaks. Under RBI's 2025 KYC Directions, a dropped video KYC call means a fresh session, and periodic re-KYC turns every existing customer into a second account opening journey.
- Guided completion brings applicants back. It detects the exact step where someone stalled and walks them through that step in the channel they already use.
- Measure the funnel step by step, through to funding, and count recovered applications as their own number.

**3.36** digital applications abandoned for every one completed

**16%** of Indian account owners have no active account

**18 min** spent before giving up (Europe, 2022)

"We launched digital account opening, so the onboarding problem is solved."

Cornerstone Advisors counted it differently. In its [2026 Digital Banking Performance Metrics](https://www.crnrstone.com/gritty-insights/research/2026-digital-banking-performance-metrics), digital openings reached 27 percent of all new checking accounts at US banks and credit unions. For every one of those accounts, 3.36 applications were abandoned.

More than three people walked away for every one who stayed.

Digital account opening drop-off is the share of applicants who start opening a savings or current account online and never end up with a funded, active account. It covers abandonment inside the form, stalls at identity and video verification, and the quieter loss after approval, when an account exists on paper but never receives a deposit.

Every bank that sells savings and current accounts online carries some digital account opening drop-off. This guide follows the applicant through each of those stalls, with India as the lead lens and lessons that travel to any bank. You will see where the leaks sit, why India's rules add two of its own, and how to bring a stalled applicant back to the exact step they left.

## How much does digital account opening drop-off cost a bank?

More than most funnel reports admit.

Cornerstone's 2025 edition of the same study put a number on the lost volume. If no digital applications had been abandoned in 2024, the average institution would have opened nearly 9,600 more checking accounts. Banks at the 75th percentile for abandonment were losing more accounts than they completed.

A quarter of institutions run a front door that turns away more customers than it lets in!

![Chart of digital account opening drop-off: a red-orange column 3.36 times taller than a cream one, showing 3.36 applications abandoned for every digital checking account completed, Cornerstone Advisors 2026](https://prod.superblogcdn.com/site_cuid_cm7ah6s1d005z13xnfz2oplu9/images/digital-account-opening-01-abandoned-vs-completed-1790544445861-compressed.jpg)

The effort those applicants put in makes it worse. Signicat's 2022 [Battle to Onboard](https://www.signicat.com/press-releases/the-battle-to-onboard-2022) survey of 7,600 European consumers found that 68 percent had abandoned a financial application in the previous year.

The average person spent 18 minutes and 53 seconds before giving up. These are motivated people who did the hard part, then left over something small enough to fix.

Abandonment is a verdict on the one step where the applicant ran out of patience or help.

## Where do savings and current account applicants stall?

Almost always in one of four places, and together they make up most digital account opening drop-off. Each one looks different on a dashboard, and most dashboards only see the first.

### The form that asks too much

Onfido's [2024 end-user research](https://www.entrust.com/company/newsroom/8-out-of-10-consumers-prefer-full-digital-banking-experience-yet-some-are-left-short-changed) found that 22 percent of consumers abandoned a new-account sign-up in the past year.

The top reasons were plain. It took too long (37 percent) or it was too confusing (35 percent). Every extra field for occupation, source of funds or nominee details is a small bet on the applicant's patience.

### The identity and document step

The applicant reaches the upload screen and discovers they need a document they do not have at hand. Signicat found that 38 percent of abandoners left because they did not have the right identity credentials. Nobody told them in advance, so the session ends with a closed tab and a half-built application.

### The video verification appointment

In India, remote onboarding often runs through a live video call with a bank official. That call needs a slot, a quiet room, good light and a steady connection.

Miss the slot and the application waits. Nobody on the bank side may notice for days.

### The funding step

The account is approved and the welcome message goes out. Then nothing.

No first deposit, no salary credit, no debit card activation. The bank counts a win while the customer has already moved on.

Where the applicant stallsWhat the dashboard showsWhat actually happenedLong formSession timeoutConfused by one field and gave upDocument uploadIncomplete applicationNeeded a document they did not have readyVideo verificationPending verificationMissed the slot or the call droppedFundingAccount openedNever deposited a rupee

Read the last column again. Each applicant has a specific, fixable problem, and the system files it under a generic status.

Your funnel leaks at four named steps, and each needs a different fix.

## Why does India's video KYC route add its own drop-off point?

Because it depends on a live appointment, and live appointments break. The Reserve Bank of India's [Commercial Banks Know Your Customer Directions, 2025](https://rbi.org.in/scripts/BS_ViewMasDirections.aspx?id=13141), issued on November 28, 2025, set the rules for the Video-based Customer Identification Process, or V-CIP.

Three clauses matter for drop-off:

- **It counts as face-to-face.** A V-CIP that follows the prescribed standards is treated on par with in-person identification, which is what makes a fully digital savings account possible.
- **It comes first.** A bank that offers V-CIP must present it as the first option for remote onboarding.
- **A dropped call starts over.** A pause does not create a new video file, but a call drop or disconnection means a fresh session.

Picture an applicant in a tier-2 town on a patchy mobile connection. The call drops at minute six, and the next available slot is tomorrow afternoon, during work hours.

That is the Reconnect Tax. Every dropped call charges the applicant a second appointment, and a share of them never pay it.

The rules are sound. The directions even require that liveness checks do not exclude people with special needs. The drop-off comes from what happens between the failed call and the next one, when the applicant hears nothing specific from the bank.

> A dropped video call is a scheduling problem the applicant should never have to solve alone.

The call drop is inevitable. The digital account opening drop-off that follows it is optional.

## Why is an opened account not the finish line?

An opened account is a promise. A funded account is a customer. Most funnel reports stop at the first.

The World Bank's [Global Findex 2025](https://www.worldbank.org/en/publication/globalfindex) shows how big that gap can get. In India, 16 percent of account owners do not have an active account, against an average of 4 percent across other low- and middle-income economies.

![Chart comparing 16 percent of Indian account owners with no active account against 4 percent in other low and middle income economies, World Bank Global Findex 2025](https://prod.superblogcdn.com/site_cuid_cm7ah6s1d005z13xnfz2oplu9/images/digital-account-opening-02-india-inactive-accounts-1790544447443-compressed.jpg)

This is the Empty Account. It passed every check, cost the bank a full onboarding, and holds nothing.

The fix starts with definitions. Count an application as complete when the first deposit lands, not when the account number is issued.

Then look at the days after approval. Did the customer set up the app, register for UPI or link a salary credit? Those first moves decide whether the account becomes a relationship or a statistic.

If your digital account opening drop-off report ends at "account opened", it is missing the most expensive stall of all.

## Do existing customers drop off too?

Yes, and in India the rules make it visible. Periodic updation of KYC, better known as re-KYC, is due every two years for high-risk customers, every eight years for medium-risk and every ten for low-risk, under the same RBI directions.

Banks must send at least three notices before the due date and three reminders after it, with at least one of each by letter. Customers whose details have not changed can self-declare through registered email, registered mobile, ATMs, internet banking or the mobile app. An RBI [amendment of June 12, 2025](https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/NotificationUser.aspx?Id=12866&Mode=0) let low-risk customers keep transacting until one year after their KYC fell due, or June 30, 2026, whichever came later.

![Sequence of seven clay objects on a track: three notices before the re-KYC due date, the due date as a red-orange pillar, and three reminders after it, per RBI KYC Directions 2025](https://prod.superblogcdn.com/site_cuid_cm7ah6s1d005z13xnfz2oplu9/images/digital-account-opening-03-rekyc-notices-1790544448948-compressed.jpg)

The scale of the backlog shows in the regulator's own campaign. By August 11, 2025, banks had held more than 1.41 lakh re-KYC camps at the gram panchayat level and completed re-KYC in over 35 lakh accounts, according to an [RBI press release](https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/BS_PressReleaseDisplay.aspx?prid=61003).

Look closely and re-KYC is account opening again. There is a request, a document or declaration, a verification step and a chance to stall at each one. Accounts with no customer-induced transactions for two years turn inoperative under RBI's January 2024 instructions, and reactivating them runs through KYC as well.

Every bank runs two onboarding funnels. The second one is full of customers you already won.

## How do you bring stalled applicants back to the exact step?

You stop sending them back to the start. Most recovery today is a batch reminder that treats every stalled applicant the same way.

**The old way:** "Dear customer, your account opening application is incomplete. Click here to continue."

It goes to everyone with a pending status. A call centre follows, maybe, dialling the next morning without knowing where the applicant got stuck.

**The better way:** "Your video verification call dropped at 7:42 pm. Everything else is saved, so you only need a fresh call. Slots are open tonight at 8:15 and 8:40, which works?"

It goes out within minutes, in the channel the applicant last used.

The second message names the step, removes the fear of starting over and asks for one small decision.

Guided completion works on four principles:

1. **Detect the specific stall.** Watch each step, so a missed video slot and a failed upload trigger different responses.
2. **Speak to the step.** Refer to the exact document, field or appointment, never to "your pending application".
3. **Keep the context everywhere.** An applicant who starts on the web, replies on WhatsApp and walks into a branch should never be asked to begin again.
4. **Answer the question behind the stall.** Many applicants stop because of a doubt about fees, nominees or which document counts. Answer it in the conversation and the application moves.

This is where our earlier guide to [fintech onboarding drop-off](https://zigment.ai/blog/7-ways-to-reduce-fintech-onboarding-drop-off-in-2026 "7 Ways to Reduce Fintech Onboarding Drop-Off in 2026") goes deeper on individual tactics, and why [the document upload step](https://zigment.ai/blog/kyc-automation-why-50percent-of-fintech-users-abandon "KYC Automation: Why Fintech Users Abandon at Document Upload") deserves its own playbook.

A reminder asks the applicant to remember what went wrong. Guided completion already knows.

## Where does Zigment fit in digital account opening?

Zigment is a [Conversational Revenue Orchestration Platform](https://zigment.ai/blog/conversational-revenue-orchestration-what-it-is "Conversational Revenue Orchestration: What It Is and Why Fintech Needs It") for GTM teams. It sits on top of the CRM and onboarding systems a bank already runs, such as HubSpot or Salesforce. Its job in account opening is to cut digital account opening drop-off through guided completion.

The [Conversation Graph](https://zigment.ai/blog/what-is-the-conversation-graph "What Is the Conversation Graph and Why Your Stack Needs One") keeps one timeline per applicant across web, WhatsApp, SMS, email and voice. When someone stalls, Zigment sees which step it was, reaches out in the channel they read, answers the question that stopped them and brings them back to finish. It can run re-KYC journeys, handle some onboarding steps inside the chat itself, such as collecting details and documents conversationally, and connect to the bank's own verification and eSign tools.

The results show up in completion rates. TIQS, a brokerage, ran a 16-step onboarding process through an agentic onboarding agent. Completion rose from about 12 percent to 26 percent, and drop-offs fell by 35 percent.

A brokerage account is not a savings account. The mechanism is the same. Something noticed where people were stuck and talked to them there.

The best recovery message arrives before the applicant has decided to leave.

## What should bank teams measure?

One blended conversion rate hides every stall described above, which is why digital account opening drop-off so often looks smaller than it is. Split the funnel so each leak has its own number.

MetricWhat it catchesStart to submitForm friction and missing documentsSubmit to verifiedVideo slot no-shows and dropped callsReconnects per verified applicantHow often the Reconnect Tax is chargedOpened to funded in 30 daysThe Empty AccountRecovered applicationsStalled applicants who came back and finishedRe-KYC completed before due dateThe second funnel among existing customers

Recovered applications deserve their own line. They prove whether your follow-up works, and they are the easiest number to grow. Our [fintech statistics roundup](https://zigment.ai/blog/fintech-statistics-2026 "Fintech Statistics 2026 on Onboarding, Lending and Retention") covers wider onboarding benchmarks, and if your leak sits in lending rather than deposits, the [loan origination drop-offs](https://zigment.ai/blog/loan-origination-drop-offs "Loan Origination Drop-Offs: Why Lending Funnels Leak After the Click") guide picks up from there.

What you do not split, you cannot fix.

## The applicant who left after the dropped call

Somewhere in last month's data sits an applicant who uploaded two documents, booked a video call, lost the connection and never heard from you again.

They wanted the account. They did the work. They were one specific message away from finishing.

How many of them are in your pipeline right now, and who is talking to them tonight? If you want to find out on your own funnel, [walk us through your account opening journey](https://zigment.ai/contact-us).
## FAQs
Q: Why do applicants abandon digital account opening even when they want the account?
A: Signicat's 2022 Battle to Onboard survey of European consumers found three reasons tied at 21 percent each: the time it took to apply, the amount of personal information requested and simply changing their mind. The first two are design choices a bank controls. A shorter journey gives the applicant less time to reconsider.

Q: Why do so many approved accounts never receive a first deposit?
A: Approval ends the bank's checklist but not the customer's decision. If the first days after approval carry no clear next step, such as setting up the app or moving a salary credit, the account stays empty. Track opened-to-funded within 30 days as its own metric so this stall stops hiding inside a completed status.

Q: What happens to low-risk customers whose re-KYC has already fallen due?
A: Under RBI's June 2025 amendment, now carried in the 2025 KYC Directions, a bank must let a low-risk individual keep transacting while it completes KYC updation within one year of the due date, or by June 30, 2026, whichever is later. With that date now passed, the one-year window from each customer's own due date is what applies, with the bank monitoring the account in the meantime.

Q: Why do re-KYC requests frustrate customers who already gave their documents?
A: Customers often experience re-KYC as a repeat of something they already did, especially when a branch or call centre cannot see what the bank already holds. RBI allows customers with no change in details to self-declare through registered email, mobile, ATMs, internet banking or the app. Telling customers that clearly, before asking for documents, removes most of the friction.

Q: What is an RBI Small Account and when can it help an applicant without documents?
A: Under RBI's 2025 KYC Directions, a bank can open a Small Account for an individual without the usual documents, with caps of Rs 1 lakh in total credits a year, Rs 10,000 in withdrawals and transfers a month and a Rs 50,000 balance. It stays operational for 12 months and can be extended by 12 more. It is a useful fallback for applicants who would otherwise abandon at the document step.

Q: Why does manual phone follow-up recover so few stalled applications?
A: A next-day call usually reaches the applicant at the wrong time and without knowing which step they stalled on, so the conversation starts from zero. Calls also do not scale with application volume. A message that names the exact step, sent within minutes in the channel the applicant last used, asks for far less effort to act on.

Q: Can customers update KYC at a branch other than their home branch?
A: Yes. RBI's 2025 KYC Directions require a bank's KYC policy to offer updation and periodic updation at any branch. RBI's January 2024 instructions on inoperative accounts also require KYC updation for reactivation at all branches, including non-home branches, and through video KYC if the customer asks for it.

Q: Which team should own digital account opening drop-off inside a bank?
A: Ownership usually splits between digital product, operations and compliance, which is why stalls fall between them. Give one team the whole funnel from start to first deposit, with compliance setting the rules and operations owning verification capacity. A single owner is the only way the funded-account number gets watched as closely as the application count.

Q: Does lack of trust in the technology stop customers from opening accounts digitally?
A: For a meaningful share, yes. A 2022 PYMNTS study found that among consumers unwilling to open accounts digitally, 37 percent cited lack of trust in the technology, and 43 percent of web users were uncomfortable submitting too much personal data. Asking only for what the current step needs, and explaining why, addresses both concerns.

Q: Can an applicant start online and finish in a branch without starting over?
A: They can, if the application's context travels with them. When every step, document and question is kept on one timeline, a branch officer or relationship manager can pick up at the exact point the applicant left. Without that shared context, the branch visit restarts the journey and doubles the chance of a second drop-off.
